Prayer, Promotion & Personal Connection
There is a misconception in the world of radio broadcasting, that if you buy
time on a local radio station to air a daily or weekly program, then there is a
guaranteed audience of thousands of listeners that will hear your program and
respond in a positive and reciprocal manner. When you come to the radio station,
you have an expectation (based upon the longevity of the station, it's
credibility in the community and the number of people that you know that are
aware of it and listen to it) that all you have to do is produce a radio program
and tap into that guaranteed audience of thousands.
There are indeed tens of thousands of loyal listeners that listen to a
particular radio station in a community at various times throughout the day and
throughout each week, but they may not listen to your particular program for an
unlimited number of reasons, (they just didn't have the radio on, they were
doing something different than their usual routine, they just weren't paying
attention, etc.) There is always someone listening to radio!
So, how do you secure the support of the many thousands of listeners that do
listen to a particular radio station? First of all, you must pray! God answers
specific prayers. Since He is the one that motivated and made it possible for
you to have a radio program in the first place, then He is the one that wants
certain listeners to hear it and because of that, the enemy is doing everything
that he can to thwart what God really wants. So, you must pray against those
hindering influences and release reinforcement influences into the live of the
listeners that God wants you to reach.
Secondly, you must promote your program to those within and without your
spheres of influence. (Faith without Works is dead, just as, Prayer without
Obedience is worthless.) All the radio station does is create a platform (or a
stage) in our community for you to speak directly and personally into their mind
and heart of each listener that is personally connected to your particular
program. We do extensive promotion of the entire radio station, listing all of
our program partners via our quarterly published Program Guides (which are
delivered to 112 volunteer distributors) and by having our tabletop Promotional
Booth at various events throughout our community, but you must do extensive
promotion of your particular radio program and make that personal connection
outside of their radio experience, via postcard mailings, handing out flyers and
reminder cards, announcements in weekly church bulletins, newspaper ads, making
phone calls, sending emails, etc.
Thirdly, you must personally connect with your listeners, both on and off the
air. Radio is a very personal communication medium, wherein most people listen
to radio programs alone in their car, home, office or portable receiver. Thus to
be effective, your program must not only be directed to one listener, rather
than speaking to a crowd of listeners, it must also be personally connected to
each listener. Sure, radio does give you access to thousands of listeners
throughout our community that you could never reach by other means of
communication, but most programs, as well as events or worship services, have
people involved because someone has personally encouraged them to participate.
That "word of mouth" encouragement (both within your program and outside your
program, off the air) is the most effective connection tool and it pushes your
program into a place of priority in the life of each listener, wherein they will
adjust their schedule to listen to your program, because they really want to,
not just because you are there on the radio when they happen to be listening.
Here again, this type of connection must be directed by the Holy Spirit, wherein
prayer makes it a reality.
Fourthly, you must do all three of these task together and in proper balance.
It is just like making a cake, you need the primary elements of milk, flour and
eggs. If one of those ingredients is missing, very few will be willing to eat
what you have prepared for them with a significant investment of your time and
money. So, what is the proper balance of Prayer, Promotion and Personal
Connection that God wants you to make for those whom He has called you to reach
and change? Only God knows! So, continue to ask Him to reveal His heart to you,
and to make the long-term commitment that you have made to doing a radio program
on your local radio station, work for His Glory and Divine Purposes. He started
you on this journey, let Him help you to finish it, and to finish it well!
Shalom!
