Questions and Answers about starting a Broadcast Ministry:
Q: I've
never done a radio broadcast. How do I get started?
A:
You're a Bible teacher right? This is just another extension of your abilities
and giftings. The best type of radio (and easiest in production) is doing a
program "Live," whether you receive callers or not. The second best is to
produce a program in our studios designed with the radio listener in mind ("in
one take" or using our digital editor). The third best is to take copies of
your worship services and/or the teachings that you already have made and using
our digital editor to fit them into the desired program length. Each type
requires more production time and we can receive pre-recorded media on cassette
tapes, DATs, MDs, or CDs. We specialize in getting successful radio ministries
off the ground and running. For example, the number one radio program in the
nation, "Focus on the Family" with James Dobson, started at KBRT, our Los
Angeles, CA radio station.
Q: Who will
my listeners be?
A: Christian radio draws one of the most loyal
and responsive audiences available. Demographically speaking it is about evenly
split between men and women, perhaps leaning more toward women. Average age
would be mid to late 30's with the range extending up into the 70's. (Our
programming overall targets the 25-55 demographic.) In terms of potential, over
2.2 million people can hear our stations, including 340,000 believers. We
estimate that more than 100,000+ people listen to our stations. We will also
provide you with Program Guides to promote your program to your own ministry
partners, but this doesn't replace your own efforts via flyers, postcards,
mailings, newspaper ads, etc.
Q: Is this
program a good way to grow our church or ministry?
A: Certainly, given enough time and a long-term
mindset. Did you know that Pastor Jack Hayford’s original congregation at
"Church on the Way" in Van Nuys was just a few dozen members? Today, due in
large part to his "Living Way" broadcast ministry, his church has over 10,000
members. Radio is a very powerful tool and the most convenient access people
have to the Gospel. The potential for your church is incredible, especially
considering that one out of every five of our listeners is looking for the right
church home or fellowship! They want to connect to a real, local, life giving
community.
Q: Don't you
have to have a good "radio voice" to do a broadcast ministry?
A: People are tuning in for the ministry and
want to hear a "real person" not some pre-conceived notion of what a radio
pastor should sound like. Some of the best and most endearing broadcasters like
Dr. J. Vernon McGee lack the so called typical "radio voice." Your voice type
or quality is irrelevant and has little to do with effective ministry. It is
the power of the Holy Spirit, speaking through you, that stirs their hearts and
changes their lives forever.
Q: Can I
record the program at your studios?
A: Yes, you can as long as you book the studio
24 hours in advance. Just call our Receptionist for scheduling in one of our
Production Studios. Our studios must be booked around the schedules of our
Production Staff and other Partners so that they can complete their work in a
timely manner. Our studios are available whenever we are on the air, which is
everyday, Sunday – Saturday from 6am-12am.
Q: If I want
to make a tape at my church or ministry, what kind of equipment do I need?
A: All you need is a MiniDisk (MD) or
Compact Disk (CD)
recorder with a good quality Stereo microphone. If you record it "in one take" there is no need to edit the program
on MD as long
as you stay within the desired program length, including your open and close
announcements.
Q: I'm really
too busy to record that many programs. Any ideas?
A: Again, if you have sermon or teaching tapes
of any length, you or someone in your church or ministry can use excerpts and
produce the program for you on their computer using various
programs that costs less than $350. They can also be trained to
use our studios at the radio station. There are also audio production
companies, that we can refer you to, that can produce your programs.
Q: Can I get
my MDs or CDs back after my program airs?
A: Yes, we are happy to pick up the cost of
mailing your CDs or MDs back on a monthly basis should you wish to have them
returned, or you may pick them up at the station, after they have aired. We
return to you exactly what you provide to us, whether it is a fully
self-contained program (with an Open and Close Announcement) or it is just body
of the program (without the Open and Close), wherein we air all three elements
(Open, Body, Close) at each broadcast time.
Q: If our
church or ministry has a special event coming up, can I use the broadcast to
promote it or would I have to buy commercials?
A: We have no problem with you including a spot
in your program for such a purpose. In fact if the event is free, we will even
include it on our Special Events Calendar at no charge, since we have an
established partnership with you. You will always get special services, as a
long-term KKSL or KKPZ ministry program partner. If your event is co-sponsored
by the radio station, you will receive additional promotions of the event, both
on and off air.
Q: How do I
pay for the airtime? Does it have to be "up front"?
A Upon credit approval (based upon your checking
account information and two business references), we are happy to extend "net
10" billing on your broadcast. Your monthly invoice will reflect the number of
programs that ran in the previous month and such is due by the 10th of the month
following broadcast. If you have insufficient credit, we require payment
monthly in advance. If you would like to prepay the entire year, we offer a 10%
pre-payment discount. With any long-term (52 week contract), we must have An
Application for Credit on file, whether you are setup for billing or
pre-payment.
Q: How soon
can I get on the air?
A: The process generally takes about 2 weeks or
less. We will need a completed Application for Credit and perhaps some form of
"demo tape" to give us a sense of the program’s style and content. It does not
have to be professionally produced. In fact one of your regular sermon or
teaching tapes would suffice as long as it represents the overall "tone" of the
broadcast. You need to create a program title and then write an Open and Close
draft script. You must also choose the type of music for your Open and Close or
you may use what we have. (You may use up to 1 minute of any professionally
recorded music without having to secure permission from the publisher. Such is
covered by our overall station BMI license agreement.) We will then help you
create your Open and Close announcements in our studios. Once this has been
completed and the contract is signed, your new and exciting broadcast ministry
will begin to impact and change the lives of our listeners throughout our
community to the Glory of God.
