Station Information
WEXL can trace its history back
to August 19, 1926 when it appeared on the air as
WAGM. The WEXL call letters, standing for "We
Excel", came a few years later in 1931.
In its early days, WEXL aired a
variety of programming including country music.
After spending a short time as a Top 40 station with
limited success, WEXL transitioned to 24-hour
country programming in 1963. This lead to the
station's success until 1970 when it was hit with
direct competition from WDEE and its hit-based
country programming.
In 1974, WEXL reinvented itself
once again, making the move from country to
Christian programming.
Don Crawford acquired WEXL in 1997,
expanding Crawford Broadcasting's chain to thirty
stations across the country, changed the station's format to
Urban Gospel. WEXL is part of CBC's Detroit radio
cluster which includes
WMUZ
103.5 FM, purchased in 1958, and
WRDT AM560. You can be a part of WEXL's long
